Subject: john's 47

Hello, my name is John. I just wanted to tell you how amazed I am
that there is actually a 47 Society. There are apparently a whole lot of
other people who have noticed this number popping up everywhere they go.
Allow me to tell you my story.
My friend Tim's hockey number is 47. Later, he told us that he
started noticing the number 47 coming up a lot. At first it was just a
joke, but then I started noticing it. Things like getting a score of 47 in
darts, finding phone numers with 47 in it, and looking at the clock and
having the time be 10:47 for example. The other day my other friend John
and I were sitting in my kitchen talking, and there were a deck of cards
sitting there. John, for no reason at all, randomly looked at a card, and
the number came out to be the 4 of diamonds. He then picked another card,
and it was the 7 of diamonds. This was probably the strangest incedent.
What I want to know from you is.. what does it all mean?

I just moved to Nashville. For Countryfest this year, Broadway was closed
from 4th to 7th Avenues.

Monty Python's "And Now for Something Completely Different" begins with
"there are 47 people hidden in this scene".

Trisha Yearwood's new video for "There Goes My Baby" shows only one car's
license plate: 4738 DF 76.

Dear People-

It's impossible to tell you how comforting it is to be a part of
something so prevalent yet secret. I have been aware of the strength and
weirdness of the number 47 since I was about 18 (I'm now 38), and have
been annoying my friends, girlfriends, and acquaintances for years with
my non-stop diatribes on 47. Fortunately, they all, at one time or
another have come across their own issues with it, and have come back to
me with their findings.

Usually it takes the form of license plates and numbers on a digital
clock, and I like to think that it has nothing to do with the 'pink
elephant' effect (try not to think of a pink elephant...).

I've always had a feeling about it, and never had any official
recognition for my efforts, but I got close in 1991, when my next-door
neighbor (one Camille Argus) told me about Pomona College's society on
47. I used that to my advantage in conversations with the unbelievers of
my clique, but never came in contact with it. Accidentally, at work
today, I did.

I don't have anything earth-shattering to add (I was going to mention
Dave Barry's literary obsession, but somebody beat me to it), but I
would like to say that it was a dark day for me when some bar band from
the United Kingdom wasted the number (and kept me from being so open
about 'my' number) by naming themselves after a gambling game (Black 47
- - Craps).

Thanks for your time.
Keep up the good work.

The 47th film on the American Film Institute's (AFI) list of all time
great American movies is "Taxi Driver".

[Ed. note: I recently heard that the AFI top 100 movies list was created
in part as a promotion for Blockbuster Video; my recommendation: see the
movies, but don't rent from Blockbuster.]

Subject: black 47 update

[in response to the recent posting regarding the namesake of the band
"Black 47" several list members have responded as follows:]

I thought the namesake of Black 47 was the year 1847 which was a
particularly bad year in the Irish Potato famine.

[either way, 47 is 47 is 47 is 47--Eric]

Subject: women's web 47

I answered a "QuickPoll" on the web about whether web sites geared towards
women is just a fad or a major money-maker. The standings after I voted?
47 people thought it was a passing fad, and 74%, or 214 people, thought that
it would be a major money-maker. 30 people weren't sure.
