Subject: latter day 47s

I'm currently tracking down aleads on this sighting: Every year Utah
hold a "days of '47" celebration. Last night I talked to last year's
"Days of '47 Queen" Melissa Thayne of Bountiful, Utah.

I'm a senior at Pomona College, double-majoring in Geology and
Sociology-Public Policy Analysis. I am also a member of the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the LDS church or the
"Mormon" church. On Jully 24th, 1847 Brigham Young, then prophet and
president of the LDS church, led the Saints into the Slat Lake valley
and informed them that this would be where they would settle. They had
just finished a landmark trek across the Great Plains from Winter
Quarters, Iowa. They were fleeing heavy persecution in Illinois where
they had been brutally driven from their homes.

Now, I've always known that every July Utah and especially Mormons in
Utah hold a celebration on and around July 24th to honor their Pioneer
heritage. It's also the date of the Utah's admission into the United
States (though that happened in a later year) so it's sort of a
founders' day, inaguration day celebration thing. I'd always called it
Pioneer Days. Aparantly they call it "Days of '47" up there in Utah. I
didn't know that.
